Student Move-In

For those of you whose students are studying on campus this fall, arrival will have a unique flavor, with processes in place to protect the health and safety of all. Please note the following guidelines:

Face Coverings and Physical Distancing

All individuals involved in the arrival process, including students, parents, families, and Colgate employees, must use face coverings and observe proper physical distancing guidelines throughout the arrival process.

No Parents or Families in Residential Facilities

We know how very difficult this will be, especially for families, and ask that all prepare for this farewell well before arriving on campus, but due to COVID-19, parents and families will not be permitted inside any University residential facilities.

Contact between parents and family members with other students can compromise the University’s testing protocol and create unnecessary “close contact” situations. Only students, staff and faculty members who have received a negative COVID pre-test will be able to enter residential facilities.

University staff, equipped with proper personal protective equipment and all of whom have recently tested negative for the virus, will be on hand to assist students with moving into campus residential facilities.

Refrain From Visiting Campus

As much as you may be tempted to see the campus, we are not permitting tours (neither student-led nor self-guided) and we ask that families not visit the campus prior to your student’s arrival day and time, to limit interactions between individuals. We look forward to welcoming you to the campus when public health allows.

Commitment to Community Health

If your student will be studying on campus this fall, we recommend that you review and discuss the Commitment to Community Health with them. All students who have decided to study on campus this fall must agree to and sign it. This commitment was designed with equity, health, and safety for everyone in our community in mind.

We thank you for your partnership in helping your students embrace this mindset — adherence to these expectations is absolutely critical to our efforts to maintain in-person instruction.

College Ready: A Podcast for Parents and Families

College Ready 2020 logo

Attending college this fall will be unlike any year before. For parents and supporters of college students, the run-up to the beginning of school will be filled with more than the usual uncertainty, anxiety, and tough decisions. College Ready 2020 is a free podcast series for parents and family members hosted by award-winning broadcast journalist Andrea McCarren.

Each episode helps parents of college students prepare for the logistical challenges and the emotional rollercoaster ahead, whether or not their student is going to college for the first time or returning for their senior year. Episodes include The Parent’s Job, Academic Expectations, Social Life, and more.

Stop, Drop, and Roll

It can be difficult for a parent or family member when their college student calls or texts with a problem. Not seeing them on a daily basis makes it hard to gauge the magnitude of the situation. We encourage you to follow the Stop, Drop, and Roll method.
