Health Analytics

In yesterday’s campus Colgate Together digest, Vice President Laura Jack reported that, with 1,650 results returned from last weekend’s universal quarantine testing, we had seven new student cases of COVID-19, and contact tracing is underway.

“It has been a little while since I’ve reminded you to keep an eye on the Health Analytics Dashboard, so please do check it out,” she said. “There are heartening trends, particularly as we see declining case rates in Madison County. I would go so far as to call today’s dashboard, in the words of Pres. Casey, a Compelling Newton. Your Commitment to Community Health makes it happen — thank you.”

Updates From Campus

Colgate’s 2021 virtual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration continues through Friday, Feb. 5. Those who missed the opening ceremony can watch the recording. Social activist, human rights advocate, and author Angela Davis will deliver the keynote address at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4. Prior to her keynote, she will spend an additional hour talking with students.

Career Services Summer Funding is a competitive grant for unpaid and underpaid summer experiences such as service work, internships, and research. The application deadline is Wednesday, February 24 at 11:59 p.m. EDT.

  • All first-years, sophomores, juniors, and December 2021 graduates are eligible to apply for summer funding. Students do not need to have an opportunity lined up to apply.
  • The career services team is offering strategy sessions where students can learn how summer funding applications are evaluated and get tips for preparing a competitive application on February 10, 15, and 18.
  • To be eligible, students must have their résumé or CV certified this academic year. Preparation assistance is available via a video series, résumé sessions, and by appointment with a Career Services adviser.

Chapel House

Once Colgate has moved to Gate 1, members of the on-campus community may schedule a visit or overnight retreat at Chapel House. Open to people of any or no faith, Chapel House features beautiful views of nature as well as books, art, and music from all over the world. Visitors cn use the time to take a break from their usual routines, reflect, and recharge. Fresh meals are cooked on the premises. Rooms and bathrooms are private. Students can stay for $25/night. Scholarship funds are available to students upon request. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance.

The Office of LGBTQ+ Initiatives is hosting a series of listening sessions (the next is Feb. 8 & 9), to identify issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ+) students on campus. Students can register for a session online, and email Tiffany Lane, director of LGBTQ+ initiatives with questions.

Students studying on campus are encouraged to consider donating any items they will not need during the quarantine. The Center for Outreach, Volunteerism, and Education is again collecting non-perishable food items for donation to the Hamilton Food Cupboard. Donation boxes have been placed in all residence halls except the townhouses (boxes will be placed there at the end of Gate 0).

Final Thoughts

Filmmaker Julie Cohen ’86 has found joy in documenting the lives of women — from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to Julia Child — making her an ideal guest speaker during Colgate’s yearlong 50th anniversary celebration of coeducation. Take a look at her Jan. 13 virtual alumni event.

“I am grateful for the help that the Southern Madison Heritage Trust received from students last fall in maintaining a trail at the Schapiro Reserve — wearing masks and keeping distance from board members and a volunteer also working on the trail. I was also especially pleased to see some students (masked) arriving as we were leaving. They were coming for a walk to enjoy the trail. They said they came often to get away from campus and studying, fulfilling one of our SMHT mission goals.”
