Success on Campus

Stop, Drop, and Roll

It can be difficult for a parent or family member when their college student calls or texts with a problem. Not seeing them on a daily basis makes it hard to gauge the magnitude of the situation. We encourage you to follow the Stop, Drop, and Roll method.

Family Talk Video: Supporting Student Health

Family Talk VideoWhat resources does Colgate have in place to support student health and wellbeing? What can parents, family members, or guardians do to help their student stay healthy and feeling well? This Family Talk video features Dr. Ellen Larson, director of Student Health Services.

Tips for a Successful Fall Break

Whether their student is returning home, or staying on campus for fall break, parents will want to consider changing family dynamics and their students’ need to take inventory, recharge, and prepare for the next chunk of the semester.

Peer Coaching

The student peer coaches at Colgate’s Shaw Wellness Institute are trained to be empathetic, supportive resources on campus to listen without judgment, provide knowledge about available resources, and help fellow students with setting goals to overcome a variety of challenges. Some common reasons to speak with a peer coach include stress and time management, sleep, loneliness or isolation, and many other topics.

Fraternity and Sorority Membership: Expectations and Conversation Points

Membership in a fraternity or sorority comes with specific training requirements, as well as support. Now that the fall recruitment is complete, families of new members may wish to understand more about this experience and will want to be familiar with Colgate's expectations of members.

Student Organization Membership and Leadership Opportunities

At this year’s Student Involvement Fair, more than 150 recognized student organizations set up inside Huntington Gymnasium to recruit new members. Since then, activities and programming have begun, with student groups running officer elections and applying for funding with the Student Government Association’s budget allocation committee. Family members may wish to remind their students not to overcommit, and to instead choose one or two activities to balance their academic pursuits. Overcommitment or taking on leadership roles before students have a solid academic footing can be counterproductive to their overall success.

Student Employment

Research shows that working up to 15 hours per week can improve a college student’s academic performance and connection to the community. A campus job can help them meet new friends, develop time management and other new skills, and provide resources for discretionary expenses.

There are a number of available student employment positions on campus. Whether a four-hour dining hall shift once a week or a regular shift in an administrative office, encourage your student to consider on-campus employment as a way to round out their experience and gain important skills along the way.

Why Does My Student Procrastinate?

Most people think procrastination is a result of students' inability to manage time. Research shows that there is a more important factor at play — emotions. Collegiate Parent’s article “Why Does My Student Procrastinate?” offers practical strategies family members can share with their students.
